I’ve got 3 domains registered with Lycos, who are due to close their doors to hosting on the 28th February, 2009.
They’re suggesting that existing users switch to Strato a) because I’ve never heard of them and b) they only appear to offer a full hosting package. My sites are hosted on Media Temple, not with Lycos, so I don’t want another hosting package.
I’ve contacted Lycos 5 times in the past 2 weeks, asking them for an Auth Code to enable me to transfer the domain registrations and I’ve had exactly zero replies. They’re sending me generic emails almost every other day telling me to move, but they don’t seem able, or capable, of letting me do so.
Anyone got any advice? I don’t want to lose these domains! The domain registrations on them are not due to expire for between 8 and 12 months, but I don’t want to leave anything to chance.
Is there anything I can do to hurry them along? I’ve unlocked one of the domains (as a test) and have attempted to move the registration, but the new registrar says I need an Auth Code to proceed, which I don’t seem able to get hold of.
Ive got a .com domain which redirects to a .co.uk domain on the same account with Lycos, I tried the automated move to Strato at the beginning of December and as I did not receive a confirmation email or a confirmation page, I thought I'd wait a bit and decided yesterday to check the status.
Due to a problem with the system at stratos, the transfer didn't go through so with that piece of confidence in a previously unknown company, I've decided to go somewhere else for my hosting requirements.
This is the information I received today re transferring out from Lycos which I hope helps anyone from having their wallets deprived of 12p per minute which is if you can actually get through at all due to high volumes blah blah Strato blah…
If you have a .com domain, you can automatically request the auth code from the domain portfolio control panel, apparently this was added about a week ago.
If you have a .co.uk domain, you should send an email to webhosting-support-uk@lycos-europe.com using the email address you have registered in the Lycos account details page to request the auth code and you should also include the "ips tag" of the new provider.
I initially went for the Lycos transfer simply to make life easier and though aware of other hosting options, couldn't face the potential redirection settingss I may have to make, tags, dns, etc etc.
As it transpires, most other hosting companies will do most of it for you, in a lot of cases for free and with better deals and "Free" tech support, often 24/7.
Good Luck
Ah, well, that's good news. The right thing to do, of course, but then we know that's not always what happens in these situations!
Thanks for the detailed reply.
I've already started the process and am now playing the waiting game, hoping they'll complete the process shortly.
I've switched domain registrations to 123-REG – they seem pretty on the ball and are keeping me advised of progress.
I am also trying to move to 123-reg but I simplycan;t get them out of Lycos … they are trully rubbish and are threatening several businesses
They certainly took their time with the 4 domains I had with them, but I
did eventually get them transferred to 123-REG, who seem pretty efficient.
Are you moving .com's, or .co.uk's? Have you gone through the process of
unlocking your domains on Lycos, requesting Auth Codes etc?
.com, .co.uk, .info and .eu sadly … the .co.uk ones have gone ok but the rest seem frozen even though they are unlocked and I have the auth codes. 123-reg say its because lycos set the admin email contact as themselves so I never get the auth emails ;-(
I think you can change the contact email address in the Control Panel.
Sadly only the Owner … but I finally managed to speak to a sensible person at Lycos today and learned
1) The email and the auth code both go to them and they put them together manually ;-(
2) They will be keeping the DNS running until all transfers take place even if that is after 1st March …
Hoorah for (2)!
